Maureen joined SSCF in August and along with her husband, Steve, has been coming in on a regular basis ever since. Maureen has made huge strides in terms of strength, flexibility and overall fitness over the past half year. Maureen and Steve can typically be found working out with one of our evening classes. Learn more about Maureen in her own words…
1.) Why do you love CrossFit?
I decided to start doing CrossFit because I wanted to improve my upper body strength. I walk a lot, but felt like I needed additional strength training exercise. I know I have a long way to go, but feel like I am much stronger than when I started. It really has become a big part of our life…we hate to schedule anything else when it’s a CrossFit night.
2.) Why do you love SSCF?
Steve and I love SSCF because Chris and Jen have both been great to us. They are very patient with us and really work to modify workouts when necessary. We also really enjoy the other people that attend – everyone is very friendly and encouraging, and will cheer us on even when it doesn’t feel possible to do another Burpee!
3.) How has CrossFit changed your life?
I would have to say that I feel better, both physically and emotionally. It feels good to have started a program like this and to have stayed committed. It’s also very rewarding to have found an exercise program that both Steve and I enjoy doing together. There are times when we don’t feel like going, but we are always glad that we did…especially once the workout is over! I feel stronger and am always pleased when I can do something that I was unable to do when we started CrossFit.
4.) What is your favorite healthy meal?
Halibut, fresh roasted asparagus and a really good salad!
5.) What is your favorite “cheat” food?
Macaroni and cheese with Beechers cheese plus Fontina and Swiss cheese…totally decadent!!
6.) What is your favorite CrossFit movement/WOD?
I like Deadlifts and also like the fact I can generally lift more than when we started doing CrossFit. I also really enjoy Kettlebell exercises.
7.) Which CrossFit movement/WOD makes you want to run and hide?
Burpees!! and Double Unders.
8.) What do you do for fun outside of CrossFit?
We are boaters, so we spend as much time as possible on our boat. When we are on the boat, I love to slip into the water and kayak. We also have a great dog, and I enjoy long walks with her. We have a lot of friends that we enjoy spending time with…we belong to a dinner club in which we take turns going to each other’s house and doing a dinner together. I love to cook. We also love spending time with our five wonderful grandchildren along with a 17 month-old niece.
9.) What are your fitness/life goals?
I want to stay as active and fit as I can for as long as I can. I want to be around to see my grandchildren grow and be able to do things with them. I really just want to be healthy and strong, and I know that it takes work and commitment to make that happen.
10.) How did you hear about South Seattle CrossFit?
We live close to West Seattle CrossFit and when I was walking our dog I used to see them working out, and thought I would like to try that type of training program. Then, one Sunday, I was at the West Seattle Farmer’s Market and saw a woman wearing a SSCF sweatshirt. I started talking to her and asked her about the gym and the training program. She spoke very highly of everyone and how great the SSCF coaches were at working with members to ensure the workouts could be modified if necessary. So, we decided to give it a try, joined soon after, and have not regretted our decision at all!
